Actor Ian Holmes has died at the age of 88. Holmes was initially known as a stage actor, and then stepped on screen in Alien films with Chariots of Fire. But his most significant special role for moviegoers is Bilbo Baggins in the blockbuster series The Lord of The Rings.
The information he lost had a strong impact on the fan community, and the players of The Lord of The Rings Online recently decided to hold a Holmes tribute ceremony. Numerous events are held on various servers of The Lord of The Rings to honor Holmes’s life and career.
Ian Holmes as Bilbo Baggins
Holmes is dead, but his character Bilbo Baggins is still there in the game, and is living in Last Homely House in Rivendell, as many remember him in the movie. Many players gathered around the NPC throughout the day, among them a server gathering nearly 300 players who appeared in front of the Bilbo NPC location.
An account explained that a Minstrel (a medieval musician who sang or read poetry to accompany the aristocracy) played the melody of “The Misty Mountains Cold” from The Hobbit in the period. On another server, everyone gathered in Bilbo’s house in Bag End, smoking and playing music.
These are just a few of the many gratitude activities of those who appreciate what Ian Holmes did during his participation in the series The Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit. Holmes may have taken the boat to the Undying Lands, but Bilbo will remain there in the Lord of The Rings Online world. The game is currently released on PC.
